Brief Bio
Mario Mezzanzanica is Associate Professor of “Information Systems” at the University of Milan Bicocca. He is the Scientific Director of the “CRISP” centre - Inter University Research Centre on public services. His research interests include Information Systems, Databases, Artificial Intelligence, Business Intelligence and Knowledge Discovery. He is member of the editorial board of international journals in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Information Systems. He has also been involved in several technical and scientific committees activated by Public Institutions, aimed at studying new models and methodologies to design, monitor and evaluation of innovation projects, with relevant impacts on ICT-based public services. He has a strong experience in applying his research to real-life scenarios, as he partnered with the role of advice and coordination in several projects for innovation of public services at both national and regional level, working with the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Italian Ministry of Labour and Social Security, the ISTAT (Italian National Institute for Statistics), the AIPA (Authority for Information Technology in Italian Public Administration), the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance, CONSIP (Central Public Procurement Agency, a public stock company owned by Ministry of the Economy and Finance), as well as the main Italian Regions as Lombardy, Veneto, and Emilia Romagna. Since 2010 he is the promoter and director of the Master “Business Intelligence and Decision Support Systems” provided by University of Milan Bicocca.

Brief Bio
Antonio Picariello is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and System at the University of Naples "Federico II", Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DIETI). He is the co-founder of the Multimedia Systems Laboratory (MISLab) at DIS. His basic interests cover the areas of image analysis and processing, multimedia database, multimedia knowledge management and big data. His research principally focuses on the definition of logic framework for events and activity recognition from multimedia data (video, images and texts) as well as on the semantic processing of multimedia information. From an applicative point of view, his main contributions were in the fields of video surveillance, story creation from multiple data sources, text summarization, multimedia recommender systems and opinion analysis. He is a member of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) and serves as referee for many relevant journals in the field of Multimedia Database and knowledge management, and as Associate editor of the Artificial Intelligence Research (AIR) journal and ACM DISC. He served as General Chair, Program Chair and Program Committee Member of several primary International Conferences in the field of Multimedia Database, Semantic Processing and Multimedia Information Systems. He is member of an international research groups with University of Maryland (UM Institute of Advanced Computing Studies - Prof. V. S. Subrahmanian). He has a Patent (IS.2006-076-OASYS version 1.0 (Opinion Analysis System)" (2006) , and has got the 2005 ”ComputerWorld.com” Honorable Mentions for ”STORY” project. Together with UMIACS, he is the winner of 2006 - ”ComputerWorld.com” Horizon Awards for ”OASYS” project. He is member of the National Laboratory of Big Data at CINI (National Italian Consortium for Computer Science).

SCOPE

Huge masses of data are available, thanks to the wide diffusion of Information Systems, which represent the backbone of an increasing number of services and applications. Actually, Enterprises and PAs executives recognise that timely, accurate and significant knowledge derived from these data represent a valuable value as they allow one to deeply understand social, economic, and business phenomena and to improve competitiveness in a dynamic business environment. Here, the application of Knowledge Discovery techniques to such Information Systems can play a key role.

The purpose of this special session is to foster a cross-fertilisation between researchers working on Knowledge Discovery and Information Systems with a particular focus on real-life applications, involving computer scientists, mathematicians, and statisticians working in close cooperation with application domain-experts.

We encourage contributions focusing and reporting experiences and lessons learned in dealing with real-world data applications in public or private sectors. Contributions should discuss the challenges tackled and the solutions adopted, figuring out how one or more of the Knowledge Discovery tasks have been addressed, such as data sources selection and integration, data processing, transformation and cleaning, data mining, data design and visualisation. Furthermore, the sheer volume of available data also raises significant security and privacy concerns, including the potential for inferring sensitive information by combining multiple pieces of non-sensitive information. In order to prevent data leaks and data contamination, decision makers in different roles and with different clearance levels must be presented with different bodies of knowledge, in accordance with their respective clearance level and on a need-to-know basis.

This special session is the ideal venue for discussing what can be shared in terms of experience, techniques, tools, modelling paradigms, real-life problems and to identify new directions on this topic as well.
